In a statement by his media office in Abuja, Atiku said impeaching elected public office holders to settle scores would only build tension in the country.

He explained that the excessive use of power is not good for decent democratic practice, saying triumphalism in the suppression of opponents is a bad omen for democracy.

According to PM report, Atiku decried the use of impeachment to settle scores by the PDP-led federal government, saying the the frequency with which elected officials were being removed from office by impeachment would destroy the whole purpose of inserting the impeachment clause in the Constitution, adding that it could not have been the intention of the framers of the 1999 Constitution.

He said the impeachment clause in the constitution was not put there to provide ammo to anybody to harass and humiliate opponents or force them out of office.

Advising the PDP-led federal government to take it easy in the way they use power, the former Vice President said using impeachment to harass and humiliate perceived opponents would ultimately bastardize the spirit in which the constitution provides for the impeachment clause.

The Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako and his deputy, Bala Ngilari, were served with the impeachment notice almost one month ago, on June 18.

To avoid being impeached, Bala Ngilari resigned from his position and the Speaker of Adamawa State Assembly, Umaru Fintiri, read his resignation letter at the plenary on July 15, 2014, Tuesday.

The governor on the other hand was impeached today, July 15.

  1. PDP is digging its grave thinking it is removing obstacles from its 2015 ambition. The whole world is aware of the evil party called PDP – “PEACE DESTRUCTION PARTY”, “POWER DEVOUR PARTY”, “POLUTED DEMOCRACY PARTY”, “POLICY DISTROYER PARTY”, “PSYCHO-PATH DRAPER PARTY”. It is unfortunate that such party with all those attributes is at the central power.
We should however not be surprised because it is a child birth of Military appologies who has no respect for human being, lack knowledge of democracy, were never train to build but to destroy, no sense of public administration but war administration which is mainly for destruction, they were trained to be authocratic and not democratic. The civilians in their midst are like them, they are yet to wake up from the military regime into the civil administration.
You see that is the problem we still have in Nigeria. Things will not change until we take a drastic step to flush them out. They are not ready to change and are unteachable.
Until they become victims of their evil instrument or the monsters they are building up now turn against them. They will later realise that they are making monsters out of the populace. Let us wait and see if they will be able to withstand the monsters when they grow and group up against them. Boko Haram is a child play. Variety of them will soon emerge that will specifically target them and not the common men.

  2. Does Atiku know what democratic principles or practices are? Does he know that impeachment is part of democratic practice? And the legislative arm of any state is empowered by the constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria to impeach a governor if found to be culpable or guilty of any misconduct or financial impropriety. If i may ask, why didn’t the governor appear before the panel setup to confirm if the allegations levelled against him were true or false, at least to defend himself? People should start reasoning the right way and stop all this politics of interest, but focus more on politics of development. The same should apply to all governors and political office holders. If any governor cannot convincingly defend how he utilized the state funds, he should be impeached. So that we can begin to reduce the high rate of corruption that has eaten deep into the fabrics of this nation.
