NECO Records Rise In Malpractice, Blacklists Supervisors

The National Examination Council (NECO) has said there was an increase in the number of malpractice cases in the 2022 External Senior School Certificate Examination.

According to the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi who made this disclosed when the 2022 SSCE External result was released at the NECO Headquarters in Minna on Thursday said 11,419 cases of malpractices were recorded during the examination.

Dantani also stated that four supervisors were blacklisted for engaging in practices against the rules of the council in conducting examinations.

He stated that the blacklisted supervisors engaged in aiding and abetting and poor supervision during the external examination.

“The number of candidates booked for various forms of malpractice is 11,419 as against 4,454 in 2021 which shows a sharp rise in the number of malpractice cases. This is largely due to the improvement in the strategy and technique adopted by the monitoring officers.

“This led to the blacklisting of four supervisors, one each from Rivers and Plateau states and two from Ogun state for aiding and abetting as well as poor supervision.”

The NECO registrar further revealed that Mathematics and English language recorded the highest number of malpractice cases with 1,588 and 1,386 cases respectively while Geography and Economics followed with 1,200 and 1,145 cases respectively.

Dantani said that 59,124 candidates sat for the examination adding that 57.36 per cent got five Credits and above including English language and Mathematics.

“The number of candidates that sat for the English language is 58,012 out of which 44,162 representing 76.13 got Credit and above. The number of candidates that sat for Mathematics was 57,700 out of which 43,096 representing 74.69 per cent got credit and above.

”The number of candidates who got five Credits and above, including English language and Mathematics is 33,914 representing 57.36 per cent. Also, 46,825 candidates representing 79.20 per cent got five Credits and above irrespective of English language and Mathematics”, he said.
