“Grammy Created ‘Best African Music Performance’ Category Because Of Me” – Burna Boy Brags

Award-winning Nigerian singer, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has insinuated that the Recording Academy added the new “Best African Music Performance” category to the Grammys because of him.

Burna Boy, whose album, ‘Twice As Tall’ won the “Best Global Music Album’ category at the 63rd Grammy Awards, said he feels “responsible” for the creation of the new African music category.

The self-styled “African Giant” stated this in a recent interview with Los Angeles Times.

He, however, wondered if the newly created ‘Best African Music Performance’ would hold much prestige.

Burna Boy said, “I do feel somewhat responsible for the new ‘Best African Music Performance’ category, which is nice. At the same time, what is it really? Is it a consolation category? Will it hold as much prestige? I’m waiting to see.”

Recall that the Grammys in June created a category for ‘Best African Music Performance.’

The award organisers said the category is open to both contemporary and traditional music from the African continent, including Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, Fuji, etc.
