NYSC scheme: To be reviewed not scrapped – Goodluck Johnathan

Despite the overwhelming pressure on the Federal Government to scrap the NYSC program in light of the mishaps often associated with the scheme, especially those that occurred during the last election. The President, while addressing a number of youths in Lagos said he will not subscribe to the call to scrap the NYSC scheme.

In an interactive session with Nigerian youths on Tuesday 24th May 2011, at an occasion tagged: President Meets a Cross Section of the Youths which was organised as part of the Presidential inauguration ceremonies. The President said

“The NYSC is a programme that is helpful to the Nigerian youth. It encourages integration and create environment for youth to move out of his domain to learn other cultures.

“I am a beneficiary of the scheme because many of my friends today, I met them during my service year.

“I will therefore not subscribe to the call that I should scrap the NYSC. We already have plans to make the scheme to be more functional, practical and profitable,”

As emotional as the call sounds, President Goodluck reasoned scrapping the programme was not in the best interest of the country since, according to him, it continues to fan the ambers of unity and love among the populace. – Vanguard news

  1. I quite agreed with mr president. Scriping out nysc will only diversification in our one & only unified Nigeria. The Northern state should welcome n respect d students n youth corpers. They’re not d politicians, they are only d future’s leader. Lets leave in peace n harmony. GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

  2. I dont quite agree with Mr.President, what he said on vanguard news may be true based on what the Govt had in mind when they introduced the NYSC scheme years ago,but in practical terms such is not visible.I have said it before, and am still saying it again that the best solution to this problem is hence forth posting service members based on Geo-political zones because as long as our DANTAWAI Northen brothers are concerned we are not one and will continue to unleash terror on fellow citizens,so who is decieving who.Mr.President you better take note of my suggestion or have the issue keep on coming and coming.

  3. For me i will strongly recommend that the scheme NYSC as it is now be scrapped to give way to a compulsory one year skill acquisition economic developmental programme for Nigerian University graduates. It should be made compulsory for every graduate just as NYSC is compulsory now.. The scheme should be designed in such a way that these graduates will be made to undergo profitable training in any profitable field which will profitably engage them and make them economically useful after the special skill acquisition NYSC, instead of looking for job after NYSC.

  4. We seem to forget that many families feed thru Nysc.if its scraped, there job wil be lost. The experience ive goten thru my primary assignmnt as a corp teacher has made me enroll in PGDE and soonest i will be an educationist.Cudos to NYSC. Mr President, pls re-structure the posting only.thank you.
