1.49 Million to Sit for Jamb Exams Saturday

Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Wednesday in Abuja disclosed that a total of 1,493,603 candidates will write the second Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across the country come this Saturday.

Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde while speaking to newsmen in Abuja ahead of the examination, pointed out that 160 Visually Impaired Candidates (VICs) were among the number of those that registered for this year’s UTME.

Ojerinde was quick to recall that the figure of candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions for this will be 117,961 higher than the figure of last year which was 1,375,642 candidates.

According to him, the examination will take place simultaneously in 331 examination towns in Nigeria and six other countries which include: Accra In Ghana, Buea in Cameroun, Cotonou in Benin Republic, London in United Kingdom (UK), Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Johannesburg in South Africa.

These 331 examination towns will host 2,872 examination centres, while over crowded centres have been taken care of by the creation of additional 167 centres.

The JAMB boss told newsmen that candidates will not be allowed to come to the examination centres with their writing materials and non programmable calculators as back up should the ones to be provided by the Board pack or are not sufficient.

He was quick to point out that however that GSM phones are forbidden item in and around the examination centres, warning candidates that extra measures have been put in place to forestall the reoccurring menace of exam malpractice.

Recalling that about 82,000 results had problem last year for various reasons, Prof. Ojerinde explained that the subject column for this year’s examination is number bolder so that candidates will not miss filling it out and that supervisors and invigilators are on hand to help out.

He promised that the introduction of the biometric verification of candidates will not give rise to any major challenge because the board has taken pains to train and retrain those that will handle the equipments, adding however that the failure of the biometric validation which is unlikely will not stop any candidates from sitting for the examination because there are backups like the manual register and e-slips.

Speaking further, the JAMB Registrar pointed out among other things that “…Candidates are allowed to change their choices of institutions and courses relevant to their UTME subjects only after the examination. This change has to be effected within two weeks after results are released.

“Candidates are once again warned that the use of handsets or say any communication gadgets in and around the examination venues is prohibited. Anyone found with such gadgets would be deemed to have engaged in examination malpractice and the full weight of the provisions of examination malpractice law will be applied.

“It is important to emphasise that one of the problems in the conduct of the Board’s matriculation examination has been the activities of some invigilators that encourages examination malpractice. The Board appeals to supervisors and the invigilators to see this assignment as a national duty to revamp the educational sector.

The Board is determined to ensure a credible and successful UTME by making sure that all officials engaged in the conduct of the board’s examination are held culpable for any lapse during the examination and the full weight of the law is equally brought to bear on any erring official” he added.

For this, the Nigeria Police will be coming on board to help provide security around the examination centre after three years of being stopped from rendering such services to JAMB. The will police will act as the last enforcer of law while the men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will remain at their normal duty posts of monitoring the candidates.

Candidates are expected to be at their centres as early as 7am so as to forestall rushing or starting examination late because they will all be verified electronically as a result of the introduction of biometrics; a prelude to the expected e-JAMB examination in the nearest future.

  1. When will d issue of exam malpractice be solved in this nation? In my center there were so many irregularities. Even the invigilators were involved. They allowed candidates that gave them money to use their handsets. Secondly JAMB should put their house in order. Their questions are always leaking out every year & this year is not an exception. UTME is not a true examination. Its a mockery of Nigerian education. But thank God for post UTME (screening) exams. We can always be sure the fraudstars will be filtered out.
