Erring Bus Driver Who Sought Refuge in Army Barrack Gets Police Officers Arrested!

The Myhoung barracks in Yaba area of Lagos became a theatre of sorts when about five Policemen were said to have chased down a commercial bus driver into the premises of the barracks for violating traffic laws. The bus driver had headed towards the barracks as it was alleged, that that was where the bus owner resided.

This led to pandemonium between military officers, residents of the barrack and members of the Nigerian Police attached to the Sabo/Yaba Police Division. Following the forceful entry of the police vehicle, a mob had trooped out to demand an explanation over the way and manner in which the officers entered their barrack.

According to an eyewitness, “All we started hearing was one chance, one chance, one chance and we didn’t even know they were policemen but we had to pursue them before finally catching them here with this man (suspect).”

“When those officers got here, the first thing the man was saying was that he wanted to deliver the car to his oga (boss) but the police didn’t hear and started beating him saying they have been pursuing him from Ikorodu Road, it was during that time that people turned out and said the police have no right to take him away”, another witness had said.

A Military Police officer at the Myhoung Barracks who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the development, saying the police officers breached protocols and should not have entered the barracks in the first place the way they did. According to the source, “The Police shouldn’t have come here, this is a military barracks and those policemen shouldn’t have driven in the way they did. We have tightened security due to the high rate of attacks on military barracks throughout the country and entering a military barrack in such manner could be mistaken for an attack.

“There are procedures to be followed when you want to arrest a running suspect but they breached that procedure and we were alerted by the security officers stationed at gate duty post about the chase, which was why we decided to arrest the policemen and the bus driver” he added.
