Less Than 24Hrs After Students’ Protest And Killing Of At least Two, Water Runs Again In Keffi

students_300_225Less than 24hrs after the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) was closed indefinitely following students’ demonstration against lack of water and electricity in which at least two students were shot dead by armed soldiers and policemen, pipe-borne water has been restored in the ancient town and it has flowed ceaselessly.

The university students had – after close two weeks absence of water supply – for six straight  hours, protested along major roads in Keffi, obstructing vehicular and human movement.

Efforts to quell the riot led to the deployment of truckloads of armed soldiers who stormed the scene and fired live rounds killing two students and injuring four others.

By Tuesday, residents of the ancient town confirmed that water began to flow few hours after the protest.

Student Union Government (SUG) leader, Rabiu Omame Tijani also confirmed that water ran shortly after the protest. “All of a sudden, water began to run after the protest. It appeared somebody somewhere was sabotaging the masses”, Comrade Tijani said.

General Manager of Nasarawa State Water Board, Engr. Ibabrahim Safiyanu, also confirmed the development which he attributed to improved  “power supply” which enabled the board to pump and release water to Keffi.

  1. What an unfortunate situation. PDP lost to CPC in keffi because of the lacadasical behaviour of former Gov Aliyu Akwe Doma to the issue of scarcity of water but two years into Almakuraa,s administration the Problem is getting worse which led to yesterday,s unfortunate incidence. We hope the state Government will live up to expectation. We keffians are in total support for an enquiry into the incidence by the House of Reps and punitive measures should be taking on those found wanting to fostall re occurance of this ugly situation.
