Prisons Comptroller-General Absolves Officials Of Blame In Warders’ Ambush

Comptroller General of the Nigerian Prison Service, NPS, Mr. Zakari Ibrahim, has absolved officials of the service in Warri, Delta State, of culpability in last Wednesday’s ambush of an escort team by a kidnap gang. Three warders were shot dead and two suspected kidnappers were reportedly rescued in the daylight attack.

According to Ibrahim, who visited families of the deceased at their homes and injured officials in the hospital, facts available to him showed there was adequate security arrangement but the incident appeared inevitable.

“Can you tell me any organisation that does not experience this type of incident, all over the world, even in the army and police? Such things happen. You know that society is dynamic and whenever things like this happen, we go back to the drawing board and try to re-strategize.

“A lot of things are taken into consideration, like the distance and the number of people you are taking, and since the court was just 200 kilometers away, the security arrangement was adequate.”

Shortly after the rescue, a lecturer of Petroleum Training Institute, PTI was also killed by the kidnappers.
