The Golden Eaglets on Wednesday defeated Tunisia by 4-2 to set up a rematch with Group B runners- up Cote d’Ivoire in the African U17 Championship, Morocco 2013.
Cote d’Ivoire defeated Group A winners and host Morocco, to advance to the final of the tournament earlier on Tuesday.
The Golden Eaglets lost to Cote d’Ivoire in the Match- day 2 fixture of the ongoing competition, and will be hoping to avenge the dying minute goal they conceded when the two sides meets on Saturday in Marrekech.
Kelechi Iheanacho opened scoring for the Eaglets against the Tunisians in the second minute. Nine minutes later, Yahaya Umar made it 2-0.
In the 21st minute, Isaac Success netted Nigeria’s third goal to increase his goal tally to seven in the ongoing campaign. That goal also extended his reign in the competition’s top scorer’s chart.
Firas Ben Larbi scored in the 25th minute to record his fourth goal of the tournament, before Hajj Hassan made it 3-2 for the Tunisians on the half hour.
The Junior Carthage Eagles almost leveled the scoreline in the 42nd minute, but for Mohammed Musa who cleared the ball off the goal line.
The combinations of Bernard Bulbwa and Idowu Akinjide in the midfield, and Success Isaac and Kelechi Iheanacho in the attack opened up a diamond formation that was difficult for the North Africans to cope with.
Nigeria was4-2 up in the 58th minute, thanks to the brilliance of Yahaya Umar who got his brace while the enterprising Bulbwa couldn’t beat the offside trap as he came face- to- face with the Tunisian goalkeeper.
Umar failed to complete his hat- trick in the 80th minute when his header sailed over the cross bar.
Bulbwa then had a shot saved in the 82nd minute, before Ifeanyi Mathew’s effort was saved minutes later.
Substitute Ahmed Umar’s 30- yard free kick missed target by a narrow margin, Nigeria will battle the Young Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on the verge of winning a third continental trophy at this level.
