The Federal Government may not be considering scrapping the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, examination, UTME; and the National Examinations Council, NECO, as recommended by the Mr. Steve Oransoye-led committee, which had generated mixed reactions.
Thousands of NECO and JAMB workers who may lose their jobs if the recommendations by the Oransoye committee on the restructuring of the Federal Government agencies and parastatals are implemented have been in fear, but the new development will help them focus once again on their job.
Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to President Goodluck Jonathan on Youth and Student Matters, Jude Imagwe has revealed that Federal Government was not considering scrapping UTME and NECO.
Speaking at the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, during a workshop on teaching/learning method, the SSA said the bodies were set up by laws for specific purposes.
Imagwe noted that the recommendations of the Oronsanye committee may not be unconnected with the fact that a lot of government agencies were performing similar roles and functions, saying “at the end of the day, we will keep our own. NECO will be strengthened.”
The federal government may not be considering scrapping of NECO and JAMB’s UTME exams, but organised labour in JAMB, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, and Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, have vowed to challenge the report in court should the Federal Government implement it.
Mr. Samuel Azaba and Mr. Isaiah Adeigbe, branch Chairmen of NASU and ASCSN, respectively, and Mr. Stephen Ignatius, NASU Secretary and his counterpart from ASCSN, Mr. Adederin Adegoke, all agreed that instead of scrapping the institutions, government should establish more to accommodate the about 1.7 million students seeking admission in about 400 institutions in the country.
Our government is thinking right, not only d officials would lose their job but d students who couldn’t process their registeratn 4 waec n decided 2 take neco, what of those that failed waec n wanted 2 try neco.NECO is doing more than we think so i think Government shld try n improve Neco 4 we future leaders
Well, mine is the post utme exams that is usually set by the various institutions. Considering the number of students writing jamb every year, i don’t think post utme should exist.
Don’t cancel NECO and JAMB exams. U can cancel UTME if possible….
If govt scraps JAMB and make the universities autonomous. Each university will raise their cut off mark to an unconsiderable point in the bid of attain world wide and nation wide recongnision.
There will be high level of illitracy, nuisance, stealing, raping; infact anarchy.
Federal govt should examine, check the nooks and corners of the environment before making policies that will be detrimental to the future.
Let the F.G stop capitulating to selfish and ambitious politicials.
I urge the fedetal govt to pay a listening ear to our yearning and aspirations of the populance
UTME curses a lot of pains to several candidates who wrote their Jamb exam successfully and scored even above average. I consider it Scraping and not NECO and JAMB Pls!! Especially Neco, cos it Help a Lot, those who dosn’t pass waec can pass neco and they use Neco to secure Admission.
I wonda y FG wil even entertain dt idea at the ist plc,i dnt blame dat rubish man who brot d idea without avin a second thought of d adverse effect it wil tel on people..govt mustnt encourag dat plx
FG mustnt scrap of neco n jamb in oda nt to encorage coruptn, stealin nd wat av u in d nation abeg
Let just av a realistic view of our great prvlege.first of al.in real lif.tings do not alws hapen as fast as we wish, dat is nt how to contro our circumstances.bcox w dnt knows wat may apen next,as 2 me o.oladimeji. Neco an jamb is gud bt post jamb is very bad
Pls F.G and oda educational board, u people shd not take a decision with out considering d problems of d mas’s. We d mas’s elected u people even d president 2 represent us not 2 over thron us. Crapplin of neco and jamb wil course a big problems in nigerian. The problems are ( 1) bribrin and corruption (2) financial problem in remaking exam, remember all fingers arnot equal (3) neco is among d status of nigeria cancelin it mak nigeria acephalous/ shapeless
I think the government should be thinking on how to strenghten JAMB rather than scrapping it. If it is done then each university will raise their cut off mark to attain a selfish glory.
Gov.should always luk in2 wot is happenin be4 makin decisions.Scrapin NECO&JAMB wil result 2 differnt problems.Instead of scrapin NECO&JAMB,I would want dem 2 scrap NABTEB&U.T.M.E.If my suggestion is considered,EDUCATION wil truly bE d BEST LEGACY.
i fink scrappin neco n jamb is nt d best idea, cos it will caus alot of conflicts…of whc its nt gud in an economy lyk ours. Pls dnt stp jamb n neco bt rada stp utem cos its rlly d main problm we r facin..
i fink scrappin neco n jamb is nt d best idea, cos it rlly gona caus alot of conflicts in our nation…bt i fink scrappin utem is d best idea
F.G should not scrape neco and jamb.we nigerians are striving to be among the developed countries not to create and destroy but to keep the standard of education in equilibrium.Besides, this is made by law and law cannot be contradited.
the proposed scrapping of jamb and neco would restore the lost glory of education?
