7,552 cartons of imported frozen poultry products worth over N77.8 million has been impounded by the Federal Operations Unit, FOU, of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Zone C.

The Deputy Comptroller of Customs in charge of the Unit, Mr. David Dimka, confirmed that the duty paid value of the poultry products is N77,824,000, while addressing newsmen before the products were buried within the Zonal premises in Owerri.

“The contraband goods were impounded this week along the Benin-Agbor, Isiokpo axis. Six persons have been arrested in connection with the seizure,” Dimka said.

According to the Deputy Comptroller, “they (the importers) carefully hid the poultry products between generating sets and completely knocked down furniture inside vehicle numbers XB 353 GBZ and XB 474 SAP.

“The importers carefully designed the packaging in a manner that was capable of deceiving security personnel,” Dimka said.

He therefore appealed to Nigerians to avoid consuming too much of imported poultry products as nobody can say if they were properly handled in transit or not.
