Chelsea and Brazil defender David Luiz requires surgery on his broken nose and could soon be joining Demba Ba and Fernando Torres, both of whom suffered the same plight playing for the west-London club last season, in wearing protective masks on the pitch.
Luiz sustained the injury during Wednesday’s encounter between Brazil and Mexico in the Confederations Cup, in a collision with teammate Thiago Silva.
Brazil won the match 2-0 and the 26-year-old center-back is expected to be available for the host nation’s remaining fixtures in the tournament, which ends on June 30.
Luiz, who struggled to stem the flow of blood and was sent out of the pitch to the medicals by referee Howard Webb on two occasions, will have the operation early July, after the tournament.
Yes, my nose is broken, but that’s part of the game,” Luiz told Chelsea’s official website. “Now I’ll have to wait until the end of the competition and undergo surgery to fix it.”
