Jose Mourinho’s press conference on Monday was a reassurance for the Blues of greater things to come, and that could also mean securing the services of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
The former Real Madrid boss revealed his likeness for the England international by describing him as ‘a little bit like me.’
Rooney has been linked with a move away from Manchester with Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris St. Germain all pressing tab on the player’s transfer development.
Mourinho’s transfer plans were briefly accessed by journalist at the press conference and he was asked about the prospect of signing Rooney.
“I like him,” ‘The Happy One’ said. “He is at a fantastic age. He has maturity, big experience and is still young. It’s up to him and what he wants, what makes him happy.
“He is a little bit like me. He doesn’t need one pound in his contract and one more cup won’t make a difference. Be happy,” added Mourinho.
“Where is happy? Where will he find more happiness to have ambition and drive him?
Rooney’s impending move away from Old Trafford took a new turn on Sunday after Borussia Dortmund president, Hans-Joachim Watzke told Bild Newspaper that the club will not allow top striker Robert Lewandowski to join Bayern Munich.
United are becoming increasingly confident they can bring the Polish striker to Old Trafford this summer after being given private encouragement from the player.
Lewndowski was also reported to have said Watzke’s comment won’t deter him from moving away from the club this summer.
Where the transfer jig-saw leaves Rooney depends on Lewandowski’s move and the possible reassurance of a starting role next season. Mourinho would however want to have a powerful striker like Didier Drogba among his new Chelsea lineup.
There have been no words from the Rooney camp on the subject, but his growing frustration at United might amount to the much expected move this summer.
