Martins Scores in Seattle’s Victory over Dallas as Dempsey returns to the MLS.

Nigeria international Obafemi Martins was on target for Major League Soccer (MLS) side Seattle Sounders in their 3-0 victory over FC Dallas on Sunday- with the excitement of Clint Dempsey’s return to home soil in the air at the Century Link Field, Seattle.

Martins opened scoring with a thumping header, followed by Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans’ one goal apiece for Seattle, now ranked 7th on the Western Conference table with 31 points from 20 games.

Martins’ goal was his second against Dallas having netted in the reverse fixture on May 19 and his 7th since joining the MLS side.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur finally announced on Friday that United States international Dempsey has left for Seattle Sounders.

Dempsey was introduced to the crowd on Sunday before the kick-off of the Seattle-Dallas encounter.

“I think we will achieve some great things here, so thank you,” Dempsey told the boisterous crowd.

Terms of the deal are yet to be disclosed but reports suggest the MLS club will pay a record ($9m) transfer fee to Spurs for the 30-year-old midfielder.

Dempsey, who has scored 35 goals for the USMNT in 98 appearances, had earlier featured for another MLS side the New England Revolution from 2004 to 2007, before moving abroad to join Fulham.

He signed a three-year deal with Tottenham for a fee believed to be worth £6m in 2012.
