The National Assembly and Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar may be heading on a collision course after the police boss yesterday, insisted that he would not effect a change in the leadership of the police in Rivers State.
Mr. Abubakar was responding to the separate resolutions by the Senate and the House of Representatives calling on him to redeploy Rivers Police Commissioner, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, from the state.
Speaking on the matter publicly for the first time, the IG told State House correspondents in Abuja, after joining other Muslims in government to pay the traditional Sallah homage to President Goodluck Jonathan, that a professional police officer is not a politician and could not be drawn into politics.
He said Mbu had been charged to be a professional police officer, providing safety and security for Rivers State.
According to the police boss, “The situation is okay. We are not politicians; we cannot be brought into the politics of this country. Professional police officers are supposed to do what they are supposed to do to protect lives and property and that is why we remain where we are and we charge the commissioner of police to be a professional police officer, providing safety and security for the good people and development of Rivers State.”
It would be recalled that Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, had called for the redeployment of Mr. Mbu from the state because he has been compromised by politicians.
