Shola Ameobi says he is “very happy” after scoring his first international goal for Nigeria in Tuesday’s 4-1 friendly win against Burkina Faso.
The Newcastle forward told BBC Sport: “I have finally scored and I am very happy with the goal.
“It took a while but the moment I got the ball, I managed to lose my marker and put it into the bottom corner.
“I’ve wanted it to go like that for a long time and for it to have gone like that was a dream come true.”
The former England youth international, who only made his Nigeria debut last November and has played four times for the Super Eagles, hopes he can now go to on have a big impact for the African champions.
“Obviously, if you look down the things in your career that you want to do, it’s to score an international goal,” he added.
“Hopefully, this will be the first of many to come. I hope to get another chance to make a significant contribution as well.
“This important first one I would love to dedicate it to the team, the fans and my family.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria finished top of World Cup qualifying Group F thanks to a 2-0 triumph over 10-man Malawi last weekend.
They now await Monday’s draw for the final play-off round, which features the 10 group winners.
