The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Sunday, appointed ex-coach of the the women’s Under-17 team, Peter Dedevbo, to take charge of the Under-20 team, the ‘Falconets’, ahead of the qualifying series for the Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup finals in Canada in August 2014. According to a statement by the Assistant Director (Media) of the NFA, Ademola Olajire, the former Flamingoes coach would be assisted by Toyin Ayinla and Haruna Uche. Dedevbo was promoted to the head coach position of the women under-17 team a year after featuring at the maiden Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup finals in New Zealand in 2008 as an assistant coach. He led the girls to quarter-final berths in Trinidad and Tobago in 2010 and Azerbaijan in 2012.
The qualifiers for the 2014 Fifa U-20 World Cup in Canada begins this month as Nigeria has been pitted against Burkina Faso in the African first round fixtures. The first leg match of the fixture is scheduled for October 26 in Nigeria while the return leg comes up November in Burkina Faso. Nigeria’s Falconets were runner-ups at the Fifa U-20 World Cup in Germany in 2010 and semi-finalists in Japan in 2012.
