Former Military Vice President, Mike Akhigbe Dies At 68

Mike-AkhigbeNigeria’s former Chief of General Staff, Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe, is dead. He was aged 68.

Akhigbe, whose position in the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC), headed by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, made him the vice-president in the military regime that mid-wifed the return to democratic rule in 1999, died at the weekend in England.

Akhigbe, a fine gentleman naval officer, went on to read law and became an attorney with specialization in Maritime and Real Estate Law upon his retirement in 1999.

The former Military Administrator of Lagos and Ondo States it was learnt, had been having a running battle with cancer.

Mike Akhigbe hailed from Edo State.
