National Basketball Association’s Dikembe Mutombo has urged African business leaders to help Foster the growth of basketball in the region, which has produced top talents in the past.
Prominent names like; Akeem Olajuwon, Masai Ujiri, Mutombo and Luol Deng all owe their background to the African race and have all played in the NBA.
Mutombo, a Congolese American retired Professional basketball player, was a top defensive player in the NBA during the 1990’s and played for among other basketball franchises, the Houston Rockets and the Philadelphia 76ers.
He told the BBC he thinks the onus is on African business leaders to spend more of the oĂŻl money of the continent in particular on sports like basketball.
He also said they plan to play an NBA-branded game in a place like Lagos, Nigeria within a year.
The ex-NBA star’s foundation has helped build a hospital in Congo Kinshasa in keeping with the long tradition of public philantropy.
His message comes a day after the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and International Management Group (IMG) Worldwide, a global sports, fashion and media company signed an exclusive agreement for baskektball development in Nigeria.
