The Anambra State chapter of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called for the cancellation of the inconclusive November 16 governorship elections in the state.
The youth organization also called for the immediate resignation of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, saying the election was marred by massive rigging and other irregularities.
In a statement issued by the state acting chairman, Comrade Chibuzor Ekwenye after their protest in Awka, the Anambra State capital, NYCN said the election was a fraud perpetrated by the electoral body while calling for conduct of fresh election in the State.
Questioning the role played by security agencies, Ekwenye lamented the situation where security operatives were called in to harass those protesting against the election.
He said: “We came out to protest peacefully, the police were harassing us shooting tear gas and arrest (sic) some of our comrades just like the way they did to some women last Tuesday. But if you are protesting in support of the election the police will allow you. One wonders if the police that are been paid with tax payers money are for everybody or for the ruling party in Anambra state; but because we have resolved to stop at nothing until this election is cancelled and our demands are met, we will continue”.
