The doctors treating seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher says his condition has improved relatively after an operation to relieve pressure on his brain, but he is still “not out of danger.”
A new scan taken overnight indicated that his condition was “better than yesterday.”
“But all the family is very much aware that his state is still sensitive and anything can happen,” the medical team said.
The German motor-racing champion suffered head injuries on Sunday morning in a skiing accident in the French Alps.
He was put in a medically-induced coma on arrival at the French hospital in Grenoble, South of France.
Late on Monday night doctors carried out a new scan on the retired racing driver, who turns 45 on January 3rd. The scan showed “an improved situation” and indicated a window of opportunity for a second operation, according to the doctors.
The family made the “difficult decision” and consented for the operation, allowing the doctors to operate on Schumacher for about two hours.
A subsequent scan revealed a “slight improvement” in Schumacher’s condition. The doctors said they have “gained a bit more time in the evolution” of his condition.
