A 48- year-old herbalist, Adebayo Adelaja, and two others, were yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N18 million by false pretence.
The other defendants are Taiwo Sobowale, 38, a driver and Animashun Anibaba 43. They were arraigned before Magistrate Eniola Fabamwo.
The defendants reside at 268 Adeboye road Akinoji IjebU Igbo, in Ogun state; 13 Bogige Oke Ife Street Ijebu Igbo in Ogun state and 21 Adegbenro street Alapere respectively.
The three defendants are facing a four count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence and threat to life, preferred against them by the police.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendants and others who are still at large, conspired to commit the alleged offence.
He said that the incident happened sometime in November, 2013, at about 4pm, at 21 Adegbenro Street Alapere in Ketu area of Lagos state.
Emuerhi, said that the defendants fraudulently obtained the said sum, from one Rasaq Hassan, under the pretence of helping him to change the money from Naira to US Dollars.
The prosecutor also alleged that after the defendants had stolen the said sum, they also threatened to kill the complainant.
According to the prosecutor, the offence committed contravened section 312 (1) (a) (3) and punishable under section 285 (1) and section 56.
The defendants, pleaded not guilty to the charges against them, when it was read to them.
However Magistrate Fabamwo, granted the defendants bail, in the sum of 500,000 each with two responsible sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the matter to May, 12, 2014, for mention. [Vanguard]
