The death of some Nigerians on Saturday at recruitment centres of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, on Saturday has been described by the Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, as “unfortunate”.
The speaker, in a statement issued by his media aide, Imam Imam, in Abuja yesterday, said the deaths of the innocent youths were sorrowful and regrettable, and should be investigated without delay.
Some applicants died on Saturday at several of the recruitment centres across Nigeria with the worse casualty at the National Stadium Complex, Abuja, as a result of stampedes.
Mr. Tambuwal said it was more regrettable considering the fact that the young people were at the screening centres in search of jobs that would better their lots and that of their loved ones.
He urged the relevant authorities to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the tragedy, and advised them to map out strategies to prevent future occurrence.
He asked governments at all levels to work closely with the Organised Private Sector to tackle the unemployment problem facing the nation even as he commiserated with the families of those who lost loved ones, and prayed for the quick recovery of those that sustained injuries during the stampede.
