2015: INEC Will Monitor Political Parties Campaign Funds – Jega

40e6a5a0078ce9056ce9f0fbf914a906Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said on Monday in Abuja that the commission would monitor campaign funds of political parties in the 2015 general election.

Jega, who said this at an interactive session with Editors and News Directors, said the commission would also monitor funds of candidates.

He said the commission would partner with non-governmental organisations to achieve this objective.

“We are setting a mechanism in place to monitor campaign funds of political parties and candidates”, he said.

On the call for conduct of elections in one day, Jega said the commission was not disposed to conducting elections in one day.

“We are hesitant to conduct election in one day in 2015, but we are thinking about it for the future. We in INEC do not believe we can do it in 2015”, he said.

The chairman said the logistics involved in holding elections in one day were enormous.

Jega said the country’s terrain could not be compared to countries like Kenya and Ghana where elections were held in one day.

He said that the 2015 elections timetable was not designed to favour any group of persons or political parties contrary to insinuations in some quarters.

The chairman said adequate planning and timing was critical to credible elections. (NAN)
