China To Build 13,000km Underwater Rail Line From Beijing To Alaska

China plans to construct a massive 13,000 kilometre high-speed underwater rail line to connect Beijing to the US, the Beijing Times reports.

The route would begin in the country’s northeast and extend through Siberia and across the Bering Straight into Alaska, according to an expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wang Mengshu.

It would be almost 3000km longer than the epic Trans-Siberian railroad.

“Right now we’re already in discussions. Russia has already been thinking about this for many years,” Mengshu said.

Many are skeptical that it will actually happen. However, a report in the China Daily claims the country does have the means to complete a project of this scale. [KS]
