Bayern’s Mandzukic On the Verge of Atletico Move

Mario Mandzukic is set to join Atletico Madrid from Bayern Munich, the German club have announced.

Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer confirmed the transfer when introducing the Bundesliga champions’ new striker Robert Lewandwoski.

The 28-year-old Croatia striker still has until 2016 before his contract expires.

“Nothing is signed yet,” said Sammer. “But I think each other’s word can be relied upon.

Atletico have already lost Diego Costa to Chelsea in a deal believed to be worth £32m.

Lewandowski was expected to arrive as a direct first team shirt challenger for Mandzukic at Bayern Munich, having signed a five-year contract from Borussia Dortmund in January.

Mandzukic scored 33 goals in 54 Bundesliga matches for Bayern since joining from Wolfsburg in 2012.

He was a member of the Croatia squad at the 2014 World Cup and scored twice in the 4-0 win over Cameroon, as Croatia failed to reach the knockout stage.

Lewandowski scored 74 goals in 131 matches for Dortmund.
