Injured Rafael Flown Back to Manchester from Denver

Manchester United right full-back Rafael Da Silva has returned ahead of the rest of the squad back to England to start treatment on a groin injury.

Rafael, 24, sustained the injury during training on Friday ahead of the 3-2 win over AS Roma a day later in Denver.

The club have deemed the Brazilian’s chance to continue in the Tour of the United States unlikely and says the “best option” is to return to its Aon training facility.

United added in a statement: “As he was unlikely to participate in the remaining tour games, returning to the Aon Training Complex affords the best overall option for his recovery in time to continue preseason preparation when the team returns”.

In his absence, Ecuadorian Antonio Valencia stood in his place, with Ashley Young taking over in the second-half as coach Louis van Gaal employed two different teams in both periods.

United open their Premier League campaign at home to Swansea on Saturday, August 16.
