Pepe Reina is set to join Bayern Munich from Premier League club Liverpool.
The Bundesliga champions have stepped in to hand goalkeeper Reina a new challenge after announcing it has agreed a deal with Liverpool over the transfer of the Spaniard.
Simon Mignolet’s arrival at Anfield last summer knocked the 31-year-old down the pecking order and subsequently spent the previous season on loan at Napoli.
“Goalkeeper Pepe Reina is set for move from @LFC to FCBayern. Medical to follow,” announced the German club on its Twitter page.
Reina moved to Anfield in the summer of 2005 from Spanish club Villareal.
He was first choice at Merseyside for eight seasons and part of the 2007 Champions League losing-finalists’ squad.
He had been linked with a permanent move to Napoli, where he reunited with his former manager at Liverpool, Rafael Benitez, but the Italian club have not met the £3.95m release clause requested by the ‘Reds’.
“Pepe was eager to come to Bayern Munich. He wanted to embark on this adventure even though he knows that in Manuel Neuer, he has a keeper in front of him who, if nothing changes, will always remain the number one,” said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
