Gingivitis, or gum disease, is a condition characterized by red, swollen or bleeding gums, consistent bad breath, receding gums and the loosening of the teeth. It is caused by a build-up of plaque along the gum lines and can be caused by changes in hormones, poor nutrition and oral hygiene habits, some medications and even genetics. There are, however, a number of effective home remedies to treat this condition.
Hydrogen Peroxide
This common household item is able to kill the bacteria which causes the build-up of plaque that leads to gingivitis and is also a natural effective tooth whitener. It can be used several times a week as a mouth wash when mixed with equal parts water or it can be used as a homemade toothpaste when mixed with a little baking soda. Be careful not to swallow it, as it is not meant to be ingested.
Aloe Vera
A natural anti-inflammatory, aloe vera will also promote healing in the gums and help to soothe down any redness, swelling or irritation. It’s natural anti-microbial properties will also help to kill the bacteria which is the root cause of gingivitis and it is even an effective treatment for mouth ulcers or bad breath. To use, simply massage the aloe vera gel into the gums and leave it for half an hour before rinsing, or use it as a mouth wash.
Cranberry Juice
Cranberry juice is also an effective treatment for gingivitis, as it is a rich source of Vitamins C and A, which has been associated with lower rates of periodontal disease. Drinking four ounces of pure cranberry juice (make sure it says 100% juice, as the “juice cocktails” are mostly made up of water and high fructose corn syrup) a day is helpful, as is eating other foods rich in Vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, berries or vegetables like broccoli or red pepper.
Oil Pulling
This is a popular technique in the Indian Ayurvedic tradition to help heal the gums, reduce the build-up of plaque and relieve bad breath. To do an oil pull, simple swish a tablespoon of either sesame or coconut oil around in the mouth and through the teeth for about 15 minutes until it becomes thin and milky-looking, then spit it out and rinse the mouth out with water. This can be done daily.
Myrrh
Myrrh is a gentle but effective treatment for gingivitis because of its antiseptic and astringent properties and is especially good for treatment of sore gums. To use, add about ten drops of oil of myrrh to a glass of warm water and use this for a mouth wash; this can also be mixed with a tincture of Echinacea, which boosts the immune system and has healing properties.
These five remedies are all-natural, mostly use things that are already around the home, and can help to effectively treat the discomfort of gingivitis. Many of these treatments will also actively help promote healing and/or kill of the bacteria which is the root cause of this oral problem to begin with.
