Wolfsburg Closes in on China’s Rising Star Zhang

VFB Wolfsburg have announced they have reached agreement with Chinese Super League outfit Beijing Guoan for Xizhe Zhang.

Zhang, 23, is set to become the tenth Chinese player in the German Bundesliga, with Wolfsburg expected to complete his transfer in the coming days.

“We’ve been monitoring the [Chinese] league and national team and there are quite a few interesting players there,” Wolfsburg’s sporting director Klaus Allofs is quoted as saying on bundesliga.com.

“He is a young player with a lot of potential. Even if the leap from China to the Bundesliga is a big one, we have every faith in him being able to manage it. Of course we are going to give him all the time he needs.”

The attacking midfielder won the Chinese Football Association Young Player of the Year award in the 2012 season.

His breakthrough season came in 2013, when he scored 11 goals and made 12 assists in 30 games for Guoan, and made his debut in the Chinese national team, scoring his first goal in a 6-1win against Singapore in September.
