The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Tuesday, said it would not postpone the 2015 general elections.
The INEC’s position came on the heels of Sunday’s call by Tunde Bakare, Senior Pastor at the Later Rain Assembly, Lagos that the upcoming elections be put on hold for six months due to current security situation in the country.
Assuring that insecurity in some parts of the country will not prevent it from conducting the elections, which are a month away, the commission also said funding was not a problem in conducting the polls.
Dr Ishmaeal Igbani, Chairman, INEC Electoral Training Institute, who spoke on behalf of the commission, said INEC was fully ready to conduct the 2015 elections, just as he said the commission was comfortable with the fund it has at its disposal at the moment.
”Anytime there is election in Nigeria, there is always some form of tension. I have been around for a while, I don’t think it is something new. I don’t think people should be afraid. But it is also essential that we get ready just in case.
“It is also very important that we have peaceful elections, it is also important that voters come out to vote without fear. It is also important that the personnel who will work for us and the environment itself is peaceful and for it to be peaceful, it is important for the security agencies to be alert and ensure that they do what they are supposed to do”, he said.
