Bayern Must Improve, Says Schweinsteiger, Robben

Bayern Munich midfielder, Bastian Schweinsteiger says the Bundesliga champions must put up their best performance at VFB Stuttgart on Saturday to claim their first three point of the year.

The Bavarians are without a win in 2015 following a 1-1 draw at home to Schalke on Tuesday night and Friday’s 4-1 thrashing by the in-form VFL Wolfsburg.

Ten-man Bayern were held by Schalke at the Allianz Arena as Jerome Boateng saw red inside the opening 17 minutes and, despite Arjen Robben’s second-half header were pegged back by a Benedikt Hoewedes equaliser.

Bayern have collected just one point from a possible six but remain 8 point clear of second placed Wolfsburg.

“We need a win as well as a good performance in Stuttgart,” said Schweinsteiger, Bayern’s skipper in the absence of the injured Philipp Lahm.

“We played better than we did against Wolfsburg, we controlled the game more and didn’t allow them to counter-attack, but we’re not happy to have drawn with Schalke. Even with ten men, we still had chances to win the game.”

Dutch winger Robben was dissatisfied with the outcome of the match.

Robben said: “It’s frustrating. If you go 1-0 in front then you need to kill the game off. We all know that Höwedes is Schalke’s best player in the air, and he’s one of the best aerial players in the Bundesliga, so we shouldn’t leave him free. You should throw everything in front of him to stop him scoring. We played well today against an ultra-defensive team with five men at the back. It was hard – we had a man less and we still managed to control the game so the team deserves credit for that.”
