Robben Ruled Out for the Rest of the Season

The injury situation at Bayern Munich has taken a turn for the worse as the club confirm winger Arjen Robben will not play again this season.

The Bundesliga champions elect’s hopes of completing a treble for a second time in three seasons vanished on Tuesday after they lost the semi-final of the German Cup to Borussia Dortmund on penalties.

Bayern confirmed this morning that the Netherlands international has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a tear in his calf muscle sustained after making his comeback in the game last night.

“The exact length of the striker’s absence will be announced on completion of further medical examinations,” the club announced in a statement.

“On the plus side, Thiago (Alcantara) did not pick up a serious injury in the DFB Cup tie. The Spaniard only suffered slight bruising.”

Bayern travel to Barcelona for a Uefa Champions League semi-final first leg next Wednesday as they hope to secure a third successive double. The Bavarians clinched the Bundesliga for a 25th time after Wolfsburg’s defeat on Sunday.
