soldiersThe Nigerian military on Tuesday killed a top terrorist commander, Abu Mojahid.

The Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, in a statement yesterday, said Mr. Mohajid was among the terrorists that died in an encounter with Nigerian troops in the outskirt of Algarno forest on Tuesday morning.

He died when the terrorists staged a daring attack on troops on patrol in the area.

“A number of the terrorists died as the troops repelled the attack. Some Rocket Propelled Grenades as well as vehicle mounted Anti-Aircraft guns were either captured or destroyed in the encounter”, Mr. Olukolade, a major general, said.

He added that military operations are still ongoing in an “offensive” action against some identified terrorists in certain forest locations with aggressive patrols, mop up of arms and ammunition.

The defence spokesperson said cordon and search operations are continuing at some other locations.

“Improvised explosive devices planted by the terrorists to deter the comprehensive offensive by the advancing troops are also being carefully cleared as troops continue to pursue fleeing ones,” he said.

The operations, he said, are progressing irrespective of obstacles and land mines used by the terrorists as an advantage.
