Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesman for the Des Moines Police Department, said at a news conference that the officers “were gunned down when they were sitting in their cars.”

He revealed that the second was fatally shot at a location about a five-minute drive from the first scene.

There is a clear and present danger to police officers. There’s definitely danger out there right now,” said Parizek.

It doesn’t look like there was any interaction between these officers and whoever the coward is who shot them while they sat in their cars,” the police spokesman added.

Police officials have however identified a Scott Michael Greene as the suspect.

They said in a statement that they were looking for the 46-year-old resident of Urbandale, Iowa, where one of the officers was shot.

They said thGreene was believed to be armed and that he should be considered dangerous. The police did not explain how they had identified him as a possible suspect.
