Chinese e-commerce merchant, Alibaba has announced its massive sales on Singles day just hours after the sales began.
11/11 is annually celebrated in China as “Singles Day” and is marked by price cuts and spectacular deals. Alibaba already set a record last year after making sales of $14.8 billion on Singles day and announced on Friday that it had broken last year’s record.
Alibaba’s singles day was kicked off by a concert this year, featuring superstars such as Kobe Bryant, David Beckham, and Scarlett Johansson.
It took 52 seconds to reach the 1 billion Yuan and in just one hour, the $1 billion mark had ben breached.
At midday, Alibaba had made $12 billion in sales, making it a certainty that last year’s record will be broken by quite a distance.
