Iran’s Ex-President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani Has Died At 82

A former Iranian President, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has died at the age of 82 on Sunday night after suffering a heart attack.

Rafsanjani is seen as one of the most instrumental figures in the 1979 revolution and he served as President of the country fromĀ 1989 to 1997. The Iranian government has declared three days of national mourning and has named Tuesday a public holiday in honor of his funeral.

Hashemi Rafsanjani served as a mentor to the current Iranian President. President Hassan Rouhani said on Twitter,Ā ā€œThe soul of the great man of the revolution, symbol of patience and resistance, has gone to Heaven.ā€
