58 year-old Herbalist granted bail of N5million

A 58 year-old herbalist, Taiwo Oriola Nasarawa State has been granted a bail of N5million by a  Grade I Area Court sitting in Karu, Abuja, on Tuesday.

The defendant, who is a herbalist, is standing trial for alleged criminal breach of trust, cheating, impersonation and membership of an unlawful assembly, contrary to sections 312, 324 and 102 of the Penal Code.

The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, admitted the defendant to a bail of N5 million with two sureties in like sum.

He said one of the sureties must be a civil servant on not less than Grade Level 10, who must submit a copy of his last promotion letter to the court, while the other must be someone with reliable source of income.

The judge added that both sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and should submit their drivers’ licence or national identity cards, and passport photographs to the court.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Ashasim Helen, had informed the court that one Amoo Hassana of Karu site, Abuja reported the defendant to Karu Police Station on July 7.

She said the defendant introduced himself to the complainant as a herbalist very good in making charms that would solve all her spiritual problems.

The prosecutor said the defendant defrauded the complainant of N5 million between April and June, after allegedly hypnotising her.

“ The complainant said you asked her to request for three important things she wanted in life and you promised to help her make it possible with your power.

“ You also promised to help her cure her husband who was suffering from a strange ailment.

“ You kept deceiving her and you kept collecting huge sum of money from her until she discovered that you are a fraudster when she didn’t get any solution to her problems. ’’

He stated that during police investigations, the defendant confessed to collecting the sum of N 700, 000 only from the complainant.

After listening to the charges, the defendant, however, pleaded not guilty and the matter was adjourned till August 28, for hearing
